GRADUATION EXAM - PRACTICAL ELEMENTS FOR EACH TRACK

Successful completion of the theater arts program requires each student to pass practical and written examinations prior to graduation.  The theater arts reading list includes important dramatic literature that provide necessary background for the aspiring artist or educator.  This list in addition to the reading required for specific concentrations, serves as the basic curriculum for the written portion of the exam.

The Practical Graduation Examinations are “track specific.” These requirements are:

.

Acting: Students must perform a professional audition. This audition must be at least six minutes but no longer that eight minutes. The audition must consist of three contrasting monologues (at least one of which must be classical). Additionally, at the audition, the student will be asked to perform a fourth monologue. The style/type of the fourth monologue will be determined by the faculty adjudicators and may be either classical, contemporary or comic.

The student will be held to professional standards and will be adjudicated by at least two TheaterCNU faculty members. These auditions must take place at either fall or spring General Auditions during the student’s senior year and must be scheduled in advance with the students’ faculty advisor.

Music-Theater/Dance:  Students must perform a professional audition. This audition must be at least six minutes but no longer that eight minutes.  The audition must consist of two contrasting music-theater songs (at least one of which must be a ballad) and one monologue. Additionally, at the audition, the student will be asked to perform either a second monologue or a third song. If a song is required, the style/type of the song will be determined by the faculty adjudicators and may be either a ballad or up-tempo.

The student will be held to professional standards and will be adjudicated by at least two TheaterCNU faculty members. These auditions must take place at either fall or spring General Auditions during the student’s senior year and must be scheduled in advance with the students’ faculty advisor.

Design-Technical TheaterStudents must present design/tech portfolio for review as per guidelines on pages 59-60.

Directing-Dramatic Literature:  Students must give a ten-twelve minute formal portfolio presentation for a production concept. This presentation may be a “paper (theoretical) project” or a fully mounted production (when possible). In either case, the presentation should make use of any and all resources to demonstrate understanding of the play, relate directorial concept and creative ideas of how the concept might be implemented.  Students will be asked to answer questions from the faculty adjudicators following the presentation.

The student will be held to professional standards and will be adjudicated by at least two TheaterCNU faculty members. This portfolio presentation may take place any time during the student’s senior year and must be scheduled in advance with the students’ faculty advisor.

Arts Administration:  Students must present a ten-twelve minute arts administration portfolio for review. This presentation should include all work related to arts administration the student has accomplished during his/her time at CNU.  Portfolio may include layout/design work, Limelight articles, examples of business writing, press releases, products created during internships, etc. Additionally, the portfolio must contain an example of a grant proposal. This proposal may be a “paper (theoretical) project” or an actual grant submitted for funding.
